Terms of Service
Last updated: May 25, 2026
Cinder is free, open-source software. By downloading or using it, you agree to these terms. They are intentionally short and plain.
License to use
Cinder is released under the MIT License. You may use it for personal or commercial work, and you may copy, modify, and redistribute it under the terms of that license. The full text is on the License page.
Provided “as is”
Cinder is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the author is not liable for any damages — including lost recordings, failed or corrupted exports, or data loss — arising from the use of the software. You use it at your own risk, and keeping backups of important recordings is your responsibility.
Unsigned installer
The current Windows installer is not yet code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show an “Unknown publisher” warning on first run. Choosing to install and run Cinder is your decision. Only download it from the official GitHub repository and this website to be sure you have a genuine build.
Using it responsibly
You are responsible for how you use the recordings you create with Cinder. That includes complying with applicable laws — for example, laws about recording other people, screens, calls, or audio without their knowledge or consent, and laws covering copyrighted material. Do not use Cinder for any unlawful purpose.
Third-party components
Cinder is a fork of OpenScreen (MIT) and bundles other open-source components, including ffmpeg, for video encoding. Those components are covered by their own licenses, which continue to apply.
Changes
These terms may be updated over time. The “Last updated” date above reflects the current version. Continuing to use Cinder after a change means you accept the updated terms.
